Culture War Collateral

On one side, we have the Right, who view us as the harbingers of civilizational collapse; on the other, the Left, who view us as fragile porcelain dolls that must be wrapped in cotton wool and paraded around as totems of their own virtue.

The Ammunition in the Culture War

There is a distinct, weary feeling that comes with realizing one has ceased to be a human being and has instead become a ballistics gelatin dummy in a firing range run by lunatics. This is the current state of the homosexual in the Western world. We are no longer individuals with mortgages, bad habits, and varying tastes in interior design; we are now "The Community," a monolithic entity weaponized by every side of the political spectrum to score points in a game that none of us agreed to play. The "Culture War," a term that sounds like a conflict over opera tickets but is actually a brawl in a mud pit, has conscripted us. We are the human shields. On one side, we have the Right, who view us as the harbingers of civilizational collapse; on the other, the Left, who view us as fragile porcelain dolls that must be wrapped in cotton wool and paraded around as totems of their own virtue.

To exist as a gay person in this climate is to be constantly spoken for, spoken at, and spoken about, but rarely spoken to. We are the proxy war. When a conservative politician screams about "family values," he is using the specter of the deviant homosexual to terrify his base into voting against their own economic interests. When a progressive politician screams about "inclusivity," she is using the image of the suffering queer to distract from her inability to fix the housing crisis. We are the shiny object dangled in front of the electorate to keep them from noticing that the road they are standing on is crumbling. It is a cynical, exhausting usage of human life, and what is most tragic is how willingly we have allowed ourselves to be hijacked.

We are caught in a pincer movement of dehumanization. The Right dehumanizes us by painting us as predators; the Left dehumanizes us by painting us as victims. Neither side seems capable of grasping the radical notion that a gay man might be just a man who happens to sleep with men—a figure who is neither a demon nor a saint, but a boring, complex, and flawed citizen. We have been flattened into symbols. And as any semiotician will tell you, a symbol has no agency. A symbol is something you wave on a flag or burn in a square. It does not get to speak.

A report by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) tracking legislation in 2024 noted a record-breaking number of anti-LGBTQ bills introduced across the United States, targeting everything from library books to healthcare (ACLU, Mapping Attacks on LGBTQ Rights in U.S. State Legislatures, 2024). This statistical avalanche proves the point: we are the designated enemy for a political movement running on fumes. But the reaction from the opposing side—the frantic, performative defense that reduces us to a checklist of grievances—is equally dehumanizing in its own benevolent way. We are being suffocated by hate on one side and suffocated by pity on the other. I am not sure which is worse. The hate, at least, is honest.

The Right: The Groomer Narrative and the Useful Idiot

Let us begin with the Right, whose strategy has shifted from the "moral majority" finger-wagging of the 1990s to a far more sinister, conspiracy-laden hysteria. The pivot from "protecting marriage" to "protecting children" was a masterstroke of cynical marketing. It is impossible to argue against protecting children. By framing the existence of LGBTQ people in public life as an inherent threat to the innocence of youth—the "groomer" narrative—the Right has successfully recycled the oldest trope in the book. They have taken the medieval blood libel and given it a TikTok filter.

This narrative relies on the erasure of the distinction between being and doing. To the culture warrior of the Right, a drag queen reading a story about a caterpillar is not an entertainer; he is an agent of sexual indoctrination. The mere presence of difference is interpreted as an aggressive act. This paranoia serves a very specific political function: it keeps the base in a state of constant, adrenaline-fueled panic. If you can convince a voter that their child is being mentally kidnapped by the school librarian, they will not notice that you are cutting funding to that very school. We are the distraction. We are the monster under the bed, conjured up to ensure the children stay in the room.

However, the Right has also cultivated a new, fascinating subspecies of the hijacked gay: the "Conservative Contrarian." These are the gay men and women who believe that if they throw the rest of the alphabet soup—specifically the trans community—under the bus, the leopard will not eat their face. They appear on talk shows, dressed in sensible blazers, nodding along as the host disparages "gender ideology," convinced that they are the "good ones." They are the "normies." They are deluded. They are useful idiots for a movement that views their marriage as an abomination, regardless of how low their taxes are.

“The conservative gay man believes he is sitting at the table of power because he has been invited to dinner. He fails to notice that the menu consists entirely of his own rights, served slowly, course by course, to a ravenous host.” — On the fallacy of assimilation as protection.

This fracturing of the community is precisely the goal. By inviting a select few to the table—the ones who denounce the "woke agenda"—the Right creates the illusion that their bigotry is nuanced. It is not. It is merely strategic. They are using gays to attack gays. It is a divide-and-conquer strategy as old as empire itself. The "Pick Me" gays are hijacking their own community from the inside, selling out their history for a temporary pat on the head from people who would prefer they didn't exist.

The Left: The Fetish of fragility

If the Right wants to erase us, the Left wants to embalm us. The progressive hijacking of the gay community is subtler, coated in the language of empathy and "safety," but it is just as stifling. The modern Left has decided that the LGBTQ+ individual is not a person, but a collection of intersecting oppressions that must be constantly validated, affirmed, and protected from the slightest breeze of disagreement. They have turned us into Fabergé eggs.

This hijacking manifests in the demand for total ideological conformity. To be gay in the eyes of the modern Left is to sign a contract that dictates your views on everything from foreign policy in the Middle East to the tax marginal rate. If you deviate—if you are a gay landlord, a gay soldier, or simply a gay man who thinks that capitalism is "okay"—you are stripped of your identity. You are accused of "internalized homophobia" or "betraying the cause." The community is treated as a political bloc that must move in lockstep. This is insulting. It assumes that sexual orientation dictates brain chemistry.

Furthermore, the Left’s obsession with "representation" has created a hollow victory. We have Corporate Pride. We have the Rainbow CIA. We have bank commercials featuring lesbian couples approving loans. This is hailed as progress. In reality, it is the commodification of identity. The Left has allowed the gay movement to be hijacked by HR departments. We are no longer fighting for the right to be different; we are fighting for the right to be included in the brochure.

A 2023 survey by Pew Research Center highlighted a growing disconnect, noting that while LGBTQ adults lean Democratic, a significant portion feels that the Democratic party's emphasis on identity politics often overshadows material economic concerns (Pew Research Center, The Experiences and Views of LGBTQ Adults, 2023). We are being fed symbols while we starve for substance. The Left uses us as a shield against criticism. If you criticize their policies, you are "harming the community." We are the human shields for their incompetence. They hide behind the rainbow flag to avoid talking about why the rent is so high.

“We have traded the closet for the display case. The Left polishes the glass and tells us we are beautiful, valuable, and brave. But try to step out of the case, try to be something other than a exhibit of victimhood, and watch how quickly they turn off the lights.” — On the conditional love of the progressive.

The "Fragility Narrative" is perhaps the most damaging aspect of the Left's hijacking. By insisting that we are constantly under siege, constantly traumatized, and constantly in need of "safe spaces," they rob us of our resilience. The history of the gay movement is a history of toughness. It is a history of riots, of surviving plagues, of facing down police battalions. The modern narrative paints us as weaklings who crumble if someone uses the wrong pronoun. This is a theft of our heritage. It replaces the leather jacket with the safety blanket.

The Homelessness of the Individual

So where does this leave the actual homosexual? The man who just wants to live his life? He is politically homeless. He looks to the Right and sees people who think he is a pedophile. He looks to the Left and sees people who think he is a child. He is caught in the crossfire of a culture war that has absolutely nothing to do with his reality.

The culture war is an industry. It generates clicks, donations, and votes. It needs fuel. And right now, we are the fuel. Both sides need the "Gay Question" to remain unresolved because it is too valuable as a wedge issue. If we were simply accepted—boringly, totally accepted—the industry would lose a major revenue stream. The Right needs the menace; the Left needs the martyr. Neither has any use for the citizen.

This hijacking has destroyed the concept of a private life. Everything is political. Who you sleep with, what you wear, what you read—it is all scrutinized for its ideological purity. The result is a profound exhaustion. We are tired of being the debating point. We are tired of our existence being a "topic."

The only act of rebellion left is to opt out. To refuse to be the scarecrow for the Right or the mascot for the Left. To insist on being messy, contradictory, and unclassifiable. To say, "I am not a symbol. I am not a victim. I am not a predator. I am just a guy who is late for work."

But the machine does not like defectors. The moment you step off the battlefield, both sides will turn their guns on you. The Right will call you a degenerate; the Left will call you a traitor. And perhaps, in that moment of unified hatred, we will finally find true equality. We will be hated not for what we represent, but for who we are: people who refuse to play the game. And that, in its own grim way, is a victory.
